Opinion Writing Linky AND A Peek at My Week Linky

I decided to link up with Jivey on her Wednesday Workshop since it was about Opinion Writing!

Although I don't actually "teach" opinion writing for another month or so, we come across opinion articles all the time in our Scholastic News and I give the students the opportunity to present their argument.  This one was about whether or not children should be banned from restaurants.

When I teach opinion writing, I start off with presenting the standards to the class.

Then we review the Elements of Opinion writing and place them in our Interactive Writing Notebooks.

We are going to begin a Mystery Unit.  My read aloud will be Ghost of Fossil Glen by Cynthia DeFelice.  Students literally run to the library to check out her other books after I read it!  Students will be reading one of my favorite books Bunnicula by Deborah and James Howe and several mystery short stories (Ex.  What Really Happened to Humpty?) along with a real mystery article.  We will be identifying the mystery elements in each.  Then we will compare/contrast the elements as well as the authors' craft. There are some Online Mystery Stories for children too!
